(Project sketch, work in progress). The
Essence-series explores cultural identity, transformation, and the transience of elements that shape us. What began in
Essence as a simple arrangement of three tea cups on pedestals - a distilled icon of Russian culture - evolved in
Ascension, where four cups floated in front of an upward-pulling blue canvas. The addition of a cup mirrored expansion, transition, and the possibility of transcendence. Now, in Essence 3.0 -
Parallax, there are only two. The pedestals return, now painted blue and white with the white paint cascading downward. Again the cups are resting on them. A contrast to
Ascension; a visual shift that suggests gravity, loss, and perhaps return. But is this a true return, or simply a different perspective on movement?
The shifting number of cups is an integral part of this work. In life, things are gained and lost. Relationships, identities, and the structures we build around us change. What remains is not necessarily the same as before; it is altered by absence and presence, time and perception.
Parallax speaks to this. What seems like a repetition or reversal is, in fact, a shift in how we see and experience the same journey.
Parallax is not about regression, but recognition. It's a a refraction of experience through a different lens. Like light bending through a prism, our narratives shift, revealing new facets of understanding and existence. We do not return to where we were - we arrive somewhere new, shaped by what is no longer there.
