With a foundation in anthropology and a deep interest in cultural symbolism, my artistic practice explores the ways in which personal and collective identities are shaped, preserved, and reimagined. In my initial installation,
Essence, I delved into Russian cultural icons; tea, lace, and the enigmatic “Russian blue” - as emblems of identity and heritage. Featuring three teacups on blue pedestals against a lace backdrop, the piece offered an external, analytical perspective on cultural symbolism.
Essence 2.0 -
Ascension is both a reinvention and an intimate evolution of this earlier work. This new iteration moves beyond observation, becoming immersive, introspective, and signifying a pivotal transformation, both in concept and personal narrative. Departing from the grounded composition of
Essence, four porcelain teacups - an evolution from the original three - are now suspended at varying heights and depths. The backdrop, partially painted in blue, evokes a sense of transition, with pigment appearing to defy gravity as it surges upward. This shift in movement speaks to a moment of release - a transition from heaviness to lightness, from stagnation to movement, from stasis to ascent, as it mirrors my own journey out of loss and creative dormancy. It stands as a reflection of resilience, a rising from darkness into renewal. The teacups, once grounded on pedestals, now ascend, freed from their original cultural context, and instead embodying transition and the search for new meaning.
The addition of a fourth teacup reflects a fundamental truth: as we move through life, we do not simply lose or shed parts of ourselves - we also accumulate, shift, and transform. Identities are not linear, but fluid, shaped by both absence and presence. What remains constant is not the individual elements, but the movement itself, the quiet force of change that carries us forward.
A key inspiration for this work is Korean art collector Choi Seung-hyun, whose deep connection to creative expression became a means of healing and self-discovery through a period of personal darkness. His journey toward light through artistic engagement resonates deeply with my own, reinforcing the idea that creativity is not merely an outlet, but a force of restoration and transcendence.
Through
Ascension I explore how art is not only a reflection of culture but also an active agent of change. This installation speaks to the process of rediscovering oneself, of being lifted by creative energy, and of moving forward with renewed purpose. I invite viewers to reflect on their own journeys of transformation, to find themselves within the act of ascent, and to embrace the boundless possibilities of artistic evolution.
Ascension offers a space to consider the ways in which personal and collective narratives evolve, and how, even in transition, the essence of who we are endures.
